Please feed back here on how you feel citing and formatting your bibliographies is working for you with Manuscripts.

When editing a citation to suppress author names (show only year) it either doesn't work, doesn't take effect until I start a new paragraph, or makes the citation disappear completely.
-
@Eric-Scott thanks for reporting this! We'll do our best to fix this, and will follow up here once an update with fixes is made available.
This is probably a good place for us to update our testers regarding a number of other citation related improvements:
- Some instances of missing data when citing using Magic Citations (journal names + page number known).
- Making it more obvious that you can insert a bibliography into a manuscript.
- Making it more obvious that the citation style can be changed (and make it change instantly like other properties of citations and bibliographies are changed).
- Allow editing citations which contain multiple items.
- Allow deleting citation items from a citation with multiple items.
Please keep checking the release notes, as we'll be making these improvements in a number of continuously delivered updates. Thanks a lot everyone for feeding up on Manuscripts at this early stage!

@Eric-Scott I'd like to ask which citation style did you have applied for the manuscript when this problem occurred — or were you just using the default Harvard one?
Thanks!

In the current version (0.9.35), I'm not getting proper formatting of my bibliography. For example, when telling Manuscripts to format as BMC Genomics (after also telling Papers to format this way as well), Manuscripts isn't bolding the title names of the papers as they should be for this format, neither is it listing the names of all authors. It is also including URLs even though I've asked Papers to not include URLs when creating bibliographies.
I was also wondering if it was possible to unbold the in text citations?
-
@jhawkey the most recent version is 1.0.0 (if it's not appearing automatically, you can use Manuscripts > Check for Updates to bring the update dialog up). Here's also a direct download link for your convenience: http://updates.manuscriptsapp.com/apps/manuscripts/beta/download
Regarding the specific issue of the citation style for BMC Genomics. It's quite possible there's either an error in the citation style or our interpretation of it. I've made a note to look further into this. Thanks for giving a specific example!

It seems like their are several Cell Press journals missing - specifically, "Cell" itself doesn't seem to be there, although there is a Cellulose. If this is missing would it be possible to add it? Also there is an entry for a journal called "Structures" from Elsevier - I guess this should be "Structure", the cell press journal?
Cheers, Oliver. -
@olibclarke the Cell Press journals are missing presently indeed. The "Structures" from Elsevier is really intentionally called Structures. It is this journal: http://www.journals.elsevier.com/structures/
I have made a note to include Cell Press titles, either in the template chooser as verified templates, or at least citation styles that make it easier then to build a full template around it.

@mz2 I am wondering if the process to edit citations containing multiple items will also merge two in-text citations that were created independently. For example, currently if I insert one citation using magic citations and then another, I end up with something like (Smith, 1999)(Wallace, 2006). Is it currently possible to merge these two citations to (Smith, 1999; Wallace, 2006), or is this coming down the line?
Thanks, I am very much enjoying the product to date!
-
@mz2 Thanks for that. I have upgraded to the most recent version, but am still having a similar issue. I am most familiar with the BMC Genomics citation style, so I'm not sure if this is happening to other citation styles or not.
Anyway, the citation includes only the first author, and the name of the paper isn't bolded. It also includes the URL and ideally I'd like to exclude that (which I have set in my Papers preferences). I would also like to be able to unbold the in text citations so that when exporting the citations don't just jump out at you.
I'm enjoying the app and finding it very useful, especially with the stability updates that have occurred more recently,

@mz2 I've only just started using Manuscripts, but one thing I've noticed is that when using a 'blog' template, you don't seem to be able to hyperlink text to web sources, newspaper articles for example. Is this possible? Thanks!
-
@mz2 Another citation question – the Chicago (note) style still outputs as a parenthetical citation. Is it possible to render these citations as footnotes? At the moment, I can't see how you can cite specific page numbers. Thanks!
-
@robpinney answering both of your questions: hyperlink insertion is coming, as are footnotes. Hyperlinks soon, footnotes may take us a moment as they involve some more work in order to both import and export them. Indeed our own motivation for building these features is partly as much about the core use of research article writing… and us starting to blog with Manuscripts ourselves

@mz2 I used magic citation (Papers 3) to citing. I can't generete reference list (Insert=>Bibliography is inactive). Before, I choose style (APA) in Manuscripts.

@mz2 So, to be clear, Manuscripts is not currently capable of generating footnotes? This makes it practically unusable for anyone who works in the humanities or the pseudo-humanities, and it would seem to be a major feature limitation. Though I appreciate your work, I feel somewhat duped here, as Manuscripts is marketed as an all-purpose manuscript editor and claims to provide support for virtually all reference formats. Approximately when can we expect this functionality? Unfortunately until then I can't use or recommend the application to my colleagues.
-
@tlechtable we naturally understand footnotes are an important element type for many research fields (and outside research writing of course too), like for instance multi-panel figures and paragraph level equations (which are there already) are, as is the full versioning system and many other features that you will not find in any other writing tool. This is 1.0, the result of three years of work to get the basics right and then go into certain territories that no writing tool has visited yet at all. It's a beginning and we see the need for this feature very clearly. I will update the forum once we have a clear delivery deadline in mind and are inviting people to beta test the feature, but I can tell you that it along with block quotes and inline math are the top priority items we will work on once the first wave of stability update are done. So there is no confusion, the Manuscripts you may have downloaded and perhaps bought a license for will have footnote support.

adding my vote to the footnote feature.

Hi everybody, I am currently trying to write a paper using Chicago style and I was wondering: am I the only one who does not get city, publisher, volume, issue and pages in the automatically formatted bibliography? I've inserted all this data in papers but it seems like Manuscripts does not report them in the final bibliography.
-
@Mar89 we've noticed that some citation styles don't include it indeed when they should (it has to do with the reference type the citation style considers the reference to be). We have a workaround for this in mind, we'll make it available within next week the latest (please write back here if it doesn't work as you'd expect by next Fri).

@mz2 Hi! As you asked, I'm reminding you about the quotation styles issue ^^
-
@mz2 Can I put some articles in bibliography manually? I have some dificulties with bibliography, using papers at the same time. I do not have full access to all articles. I was using endnote.
Is there any video explaining that?
